Academic Researcher and Architectural Investigator
Isabel Barbas b.1974, develops a multifaceted work in the areas of architecture, art and design. She has a
degree in Architecture - FAUTL, Erasmus 5th year in La Sapienza, Rome; Master in Drawing - FBAUL; PhD
student in Architecture - ULHT with FCT scholarship, SFRH/BD/1481 41/2019 (expected completion in 10/2024).
Since 2010, she has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture at ECATI- ULHT. Between
2024-2027 she is an MC member and researcher in the action project COST: Architecture and Urban
Ambiences of European Cities (CA23145). In 2019 she participated as a researcher in the SOSClimateWaterfront
project, European Research Project Horizon 20/20 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (N. 823901), whiting this
topics she has a several academic publications and national and international participations in workshops. In
2004, established a studio in Madrid, carrying out numerous urban installations and architecture, art and
design projects in public spaces. In 2009 she moved to Lisbon and opened the MAG studio - Matéria,
Atmosfera, Gravidade, where she continues developing inter and multi-disciplinary projects, highlighting
interventions on 'public space'. She has won several awards in competitions and her work has been presented
at conferences, exhibitions and national and international publications. From 2004 to 2019 she collaborates
with the educational service of the CCB and Museu Berardo. In the 2012/2014 Triennium, she was part of the
editorial team of Jornal dos Arquitetos. Among the interventions in the Public Space, the following stand out:
M.Poli Kiosk, Madrid - 1st Prize Othersmercadus`08 and HM RIBA`08, to be installed in fairs and ephemeral
markets, since 2007 - act. / Complete renovation of Plaza de La Luna (Plaza Torres Acosta), Madrid, 2008 /
Christmas Urban-Light Installations: Madrid. 1st Iluminar Madrid Award at Christmas. Gran Via, Recoletos and
others. 2006-09 / Lighting installations and Porta for the Feria de Agosto, Málaga, 2006 / Kinetic installation on
the facade of the EDP headquarters building, Marquês do Pombal 2007-08 / Lighting installation X at LX
Factory, Lisbon 2009 / Christmas installation, EcoFlatTree , Portalegre, Rossio 2012 / Nine swings-Nove words,
Urban installation in Aliados and other streets, Porto, 2013-2020 / Sound Textures, Ephemeral urban
installation, Aliados Porto, 2014 / Jardim das Gaivotas and Parque dos Elétricos, urban furniture for the Cais do
Sodré and Corpo Santo. 1st prize in the Enjoy the Tagus competition, Organized by the University of Aveiro,
